Somali Election Schedule to Be Released Within a Week, Says Electoral Commission

The Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, announced during a press conference at the Commission’s headquarters that the schedule for Somalia’s upcoming elections will be released in less than a week.

“Within seven days, we will share the comprehensive election schedule with you, including timelines for the registration of political parties, voter registration, staff training, and voter awareness campaigns,” said Chairman Abdikarin, who was accompanied by other Commission members.

He also revealed plans to visit designated polling stations, noting that many of these locations were initially identified by the previous commission. However, with the liberation of additional areas from Al-Shabaab, the number of accessible polling stations will be increased significantly.

“We will visit new locations as well as previously identified ones. I bring good news to the Somali people: this commission is ready to bring ballot boxes to you, whether you are at home, tending livestock, or working in your fields,” he added.

Since its establishment, the commission has developed a detailed work plan divided into seven sections to fulfill its mandate of enabling Somali citizens to elect their leaders. Key areas of focus include merging the Boundary Commission and the National Electoral Commission, drafting legal frameworks and procedures, setting up systems and structures, providing office facilities for staff, renovating the Commission’s headquarters, and unifying personnel.

“We will begin awareness campaigns to encourage voter participation, utilizing media and other effective channels to reach the public,” Abdikarin said.

The chairman emphasized the importance of election security, confirming close collaboration with the government, which he said holds primary responsibility for maintaining security. He urged the Somali public to cooperate fully with the commission to ensure a smooth electoral process.

He also highlighted recent consultations with various stakeholders, including religious leaders, civil society groups, women’s organizations, and political parties. “We will continue and expand these discussions, ensuring inclusivity and collaboration,” he said.

Chairman Abdikarin reaffirmed the commission’s independence and impartiality, promising free, fair, and transparent elections. “Our doors are always open to Somalia’s political stakeholders. We are ready to provide updates, hold discussions, and collaborate to meet our shared goals.”

The commission is also preparing for the registration of political parties. “Some parties are already registered and will undergo a new registration process without fees, while new parties will be required to register afresh and pay fees,” Abdikarin explained.

The National Independent Electoral Commission was established in November 2024, with Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan elected as chairman in December 2024.
