Somali Heshiis ah: The Daunting Path to Much-Needed Genuine Reconciliation

The first trip that president Sheikh Mohamud took was considered to be a “peace train” tour because it took place within the country. It was hoped that this would bring Somalis together and help the Somali people move toward reconciliation with one another. The President issued a statement in which he explained that the purpose of his tour was to promote integration, peaceful coexistence, and reconciliation. Nothing of substance can be accomplished in Somalia at this time without a reconciliation. One of the things that needs to be taken care of is a comprehensive look at the constitution and any necessary amendments. A provisional constitution is now in place as the basis for Somalia’s governance. In spite of the fact that the constitution has been drafted, its implementation continues to be the most significant barrier, along with the lack of consensus on a number of critical topics.
