Buruuj: Modernizing Somalia’s Infrastructure

As usual, the economic infrastructure of any country has a positive or negative effect on the economic growth of that country. Buruj Construction Company which was established in 2009 has focused on taking a leading role in developing the economic infrastructure of Somalia that has been severely damaged during the civil war. Buruuj is a private company whose purpose is to construct modern buildings in the country that are compatible with the international standard of buildings in the rest of the world, and at a price that the Somali community can afford. Buruuj is characterized by efficient service and quality buildings, which is what the management of the company has given special emphasis to fulfill the vacant role in Somalia in the re-construction of economic infrastructure by using the expertise and experience of Somali elites. It operates in Djibouti and Somalia (Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Garowe, Baidoa, Dhusamareeb and Kismayo).

Buruuj Services and Projects implemented.

The various services that Buruuj provides include; Building Designs, Building Evaluation, Construction of all types, Construction Consultancy, Sales of Ready Concrete, Brick and Interlock Manufacturing, Stone, Gravel and Soil Production, Rental of Heavy Metal and Transportation, Surveying and Excavation of extremely deep wells, creation of modern settlements, settlement management and construction of roads and pavements. The company has implemented large projects, the most important of which is Darusalam, a modern city (city with in city) with complete social services, as well as large buildings such as Rayan Busniess center, Banadir Mall, Mumtaz Mall, TTC Building, Hormuud University KM-13 Capmus, Buruuj Technical School, Banadir Hospital department of Covid-19, Waaberi, Cirtoogte, Baarubah, Bacaad Market, and Kahda Roads. The aforementioned Darussalam project is the first of its kind in the country with complete services that are necessary for the life and development of the society. The Company is now in control of the biggest mall to be built in Mogadishu which will beautify the city and diversify its services. Buruj Company is planning to implement multiple major projects in the near future that will take a significant role in the development of the country.

Job Creation and Team leaders.

Being one of the fundamental principles that the company was found for, Buruj has created a large number of jobs. There are 600 regular employees working as of now and 2500 to 3000 temporary workers who work daily on various projects under the Company. These employees include professionals and laborers. Engineer Luqman Mohamed Ismail Ali is the Head of Engineering department with over 40 years of experience in Civil engineering and construction. The veteran is one of the leading engineering team of Buruuj construction and Real Estates since its incorporation Engineer Mohamed Sheikh Abdullahi is the Head of Road Construction Department in Buruuj with 5 decades of experience in both public and private sector. Having graduated from Somali National University, Faculty of Engineering in Civil Engineering, he specialises is roads construction. Eng. Mohamed Sheikh Abdullahi fell in love with roads in 1974 where he was among a team of engineers tasked to construct Balatweyne-Burao Road which is about 1,000km. Leading the Drilling Department is Engineer Mohamud Isse Abtidon. He is a 1986 Somali National University graduate – Geology. Later on Abtidon did his Master’s Degree at Free University of Berlin – Geo Physics. He taught Geology at the Somali National University during 1987 to 1990 period.

First Technical School in Somalia since 1991.

The Construction firm established the first technical high school in the country which produced hundreds of technicians who are doing important work in the country. Buruuj Technical Secondary School (BTSS) is a technical secondary school aimed to provide technical trainings for students to enter and remain competitive in the global workforce. It was founded on August 8, 2015 as the first technical secondary school in Somalia since 1991. The school aims to become the leading technical school in East Africa by training individuals who can make a positive difference in people’s quality of life, reduce poverty, and develop the region’s socioeconomic growth.

Awards and commendations

Buruuj, which has won more than 5 awards since its inception, became the Construction Company of the Year 2022, after an evaluation by the Somali Engineers Awards Forum organized by the Somali Expo Group. The Ministry of Public Works Reconstruction and Housing of the Federal Government of Somalia praised Buruj Company for its role in reconstruction and restoration of the beauty of the country, and at the same time encouraged them to speed up their work so that Somalia can compete with its peers in the world. The Company has confirmed to The Business that it aims to provide its services to the East African community in general, especially areas occupied by the Somali Community. Buruuj’s vision is, “To be the prefered choice in the provission of construction and real estate services in the Horn of Africa,” which signifies respecting the trust that the people bestowed upon them.
