Commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Hormuud event

Hormuud, a giant Somali telecommunications company, celebrated its 20th anniversary since its inception on September 20. The event was dubbed as “Somalia’s success story,” and a company official stated that it was a great milestone that was intended to celebrate the staff shareholders, friends, and customers.

The remarkable story that Hormuud has been on over the last several years and some of the most important activities were the subject of a feature of September special edition of 5 magazine. The purpose of the event, which was dubbed “Somalia’s success tale,” was to demonstrate the success of businesses that are owned by Somalis.

This two-day event, organized by Hormuud Telecom was attended by senior members of the Somalia federal government, such as the Deputy Prime Minister, Salah Ahmed Jama, the Ministry of Education, Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, the governor of Benadir and mayor of the capital Yusuf Hussien Jimale (Madale) as well as other honorary guests from various parts of the community.

The dignitaries that attened the event were full of praises for Hormuud, “Any tree in Somalia that you stand under, you will find a network. This is made possible by Somali intellectuals, led by the Hormuud Telecom company.” The Minister of Education and Higher Education of the Government of Somalia, Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir.

Mohamud Abdikarin Gabeyre, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce on his part said that  “I congratulate Hormuud, who turned 20 years old today. We know what the firm has done for this country and its people. Every time droughts, floods and problems occur, you will hear the name Hormuud, they have always been at the front in the rescue.”

Yusuf Hussein Jimale, The governor of Banadir and the mayor of Mogadishu said, “Hormoud has done a lot in this country, and I congratulate them on her 20th anniversary because they have  done something in every aspect.”

Sh. Abdihayi Sh. Adam who is a Somali scholar noed that “When our country was destroyed, Somali businessmen and academics did not give up, they committed themselves to continue life. The consensus they made was the success that we are celebrating today as the 20th anniversary of the Hormuud company. I thank Hormuud and everyone who played a role. from rebuilding our country and serving our community.”

The CEO of hormuud Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf had a powerful statement to make saying that “Hormuud company is owned by Somalis, managed by Somalis, and created for Somalis. From the beginning of the establishment of the company, we have had one goal, which is to improve the lives of the Somali people, so that our country is in line with the rest of the world.”

The director of Banadir maternity hospital, Dr. Fartun Sharif, who delivered a powerful speech at the event, said, “I cannot express enough how much Hormuud Salaam Foundation  has helped the health community, particularly Benadir maternity hospital. when covid 19 broke out in 2020, Somalia was among the least prepared to deal with the pandemic. The Hormuud Salaam Foundation donated much-needed 2,500 oxygen tanks to us saving the lives of many patients, and later they constructed the country’s first oxygen plant for approximately 600 thousand dollars.

In addition to the speeches and panels, a showcase exhibition featuring all the company’s portfolios was held at the event, during which some significant announcements were made, some services were offered at a reduced rate, and a lottery was conducted in which valuable prizes were awarded to the participants, including the latest iPhone and Samsung smartphones.

The event brought hundreds of people together for valuable panels, in the closing stages of the event, awards were presented to universities, companies, and airlines that have served society for more than 20 years in difficult times. Mogadishu University, SIMAD University, Banadir University, Dahabshiil, Amal, Daallo Airlines, and Jubba Express were awarded certificates of appreciation by Hormuud Telecom.

Meanwhile, the Somali under-17 national team the U-17 that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 qualifiers for CECAF was brought to the event as a surprise package to participate in the celebrations.

As a gesture of encouragement, Hormuud Salaam Foundation awarded $15,000 dollars in cash as well as free internet access for a full year to the players and coaches of the national team.

In addition, the EVC Plus service offered by Hormuud Telecom celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2021, marking ten years from the beginning of the service. The service was introduced by Hormuud Telecom in 2011 with the goals of modernizing the country’s money transaction system and expanding access to financial services across the nation located in the Horn of Africa. In the decade that it has been around, the EVC service has undergone a number of changes in order to improve the quality of the user experience it provides and to include critical new features that will further alter the way individuals and businesses go about their daily lives.
