The planning and preparation for the Garacad port project had been ongoing for a long time, however the project did not commence until 2019, since its inception, it has gone through a number of different stages. The project is community-driven, and a Somali company called Wadaagsan is in charge of its management. The project is divided into two phases, and each phase includes two sub phases. The first phase of the project has been finished, and the second phase is expected to be finished soon.
This port, whose construction of the first phase amounted to 120 million dollars and is funded by locals with cooperation from all sectors of society and the Puntland government. It is estimated that the total cost of the project will be $325 million when it is completed. According to Saeed Abdulqadir Fadi, manager of the Wadaagsan company that constructed the port, “The idea was originally owned by businessmen, but the Puntland government and the people also participated in the construction.”

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Said Abdullahi Deni both participated in the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon to commemorate the first phase’s completion. At the celebration, President Hassan delivered a speech in which he praised the people of Puntland and the Somali people in general for the collaboration that led to their successes.
“The foundation for any kind of advancement is peace and harmony. The people who live in this region and Puntland in general have demonstrated bravery, hard work, and the ways in which the Somali people are capable of achieving great things when they work together. Everyone in Somalia has a stake in the outcome of this endeavor “stated President Hassan Sheikh.
The President commended the Puntland government and the Puntland population for attaining success. He said that it reflected the Somali people’s commitment to progress and collaboration.
“Today is a joyous day, and it is a day for everyone of us to applaud one another and give thanks to God. Peace and togetherness are the foundations upon which all development is built. The people who live in this region and Puntland in general have demonstrated bravery, hard work, and the ways in which the Somali people are capable of achieving great things when they work together, the accomplishment of this goal is a collective achievement for everyone of Somalia.”
The President urged the various regions of the country, the states, and the Somali people in general to compete for development and cooperation. He also highlighted the support and priority that the government places on consultation projects.
